Chronological age (CA) is a specific calculation used in standardized testing and psychoeducational assessment: a person's exact age as of a particular test date, expressed as years and months. This calculator uses the 30-day-per-month convention documented for that purpose, which is not quite the same as an everyday calendar age calculation. How chronological age is calculated
Chronological age is found by subtracting the date of birth from the test date, broken into years, months and days, the same basic idea as any age calculation. The specific convention used for CA in testing manuals differs from an everyday calendar calculation in one detail: when the day-of-month needs to be borrowed (because the test date's day-of-month is earlier than the birth date's), it borrows a fixed 30 days, not the real length of whichever month is involved. An everyday calendar age calculator, like the main age calculator on this site, borrows the actual number of days in the relevant month instead, 28, 29, 30 or 31 depending on which month it is. The two methods usually agree, but they can differ by a day when the real month involved is shorter or longer than 30 days.
The result is commonly written in "years;months" notation, for example 8;4 meaning 8 years and 4 months, which is the shorthand this calculator shows alongside the full years/months/days breakdown.
Three worked examples, including where it diverges from a calendar age
Using the exact 30-day-borrow method this calculator runs:
- Birth date March 14, 2016, test date August 25, 2026: chronological age 10;5, or 10 years, 5 months, 11 days. In this case the calendar-accurate method gives the identical answer.
- Birth date September 20, 2018, test date February 3, 2026: chronological age 7;4, or 7 years, 4 months, 13 days. The calendar-accurate method for the same two dates gives 7 years, 4 months, 14 days, one day higher, because the real month being borrowed from has more than 30 days.
- Birth date January 31, 2015, test date March 1, 2026: chronological age 11;1, or 11 years, 1 month, 0 days. The calendar-accurate method gives 11 years, 1 month, 1 day for the same pair, again a one-day difference, this time because the real borrowed month (February) is shorter than 30 days.
Why this differs from the everyday age calculator
The 30-day-per-month convention exists because test manuals need a fixed, simple rule that gives a consistent answer without requiring a full calendar lookup by hand, useful when CA tables were originally built for paper scoring, well before spreadsheets and calculators were standard in a testing room. Treating every month as exactly 30 days for the purpose of borrowing keeps the arithmetic identical regardless of which specific months are involved, at the cost of an occasional one-day disagreement with a true calendar calculation. That trade-off is intentional in the original convention, not a limitation of this calculator specifically.
